PHOTOS: Earth Ninjas final Aldergrove clean-up collects 380 pounds of litter

Founder moving to Okanagan to continue effort with home-schooled kids

A total of 14 volunteers with Earth Ninjas found 380 pounds of litter during their three-hour clean-up on Sunday, Sept. 22, on Robertson Crescent.

Everything from laptops and cell phones to literal car seats – ones adults sit in, not the kids' ones – and diapers, plus five littered bags of drywall, were collected into 23 bags by volunteers to be properly recycled and disposed of.

Earth Ninjas founder Jocelyn Titus called it a "new record."

"We weren't expecting this amount of trash, but every clean up is a surprise," she said.

It was the fifth annual memorial clean-up in honour ot Titus' step-dad David Brett, and also marked the final clean-up in Aldergrove for the local volunteer group.

Titus is moving to the Okanagan, but plans to continue Earth Ninjas' clean-up efforts in a different capacity.

"After reflecting this summer, I've decided to transition Earth Ninjas into a series of home-schooling focused events," she told The Star.

The new program will be called Earth Ninjas Kids, where home-schooled kids will have the opportunity to participate in social clean-up activities with each other.

"By shifting to home-schooling events, I'll be able to offer activities that focus on learning how to care for our planet. Our hands on approach will teach kids the important of leaving the environment better than they found it," Titus explained.

Activities will include clean-up sessions in local parks, lessons on where trash belongs, recycling games, and more to come.

"I believe this transition will provide a more enriching and flexible experience for both children and parents, creating a deeper connection between education and the world around us."

Titus added that she is excited for this new path forward for Earth Ninjas.
