Mental health episode led to 91Ô´´ arrest

No injuries as man taken into custody

A 91Ô´´ man was taken to hospital in custody on Sunday after a mental health episode that led to a "combative" arrest by RCMP officers.

The incident took place in the Pyramid Apartments complex in the 5300 block of 204 Street in 91Ô´´ City on July 21.

Cpl. Zynal Sharoom said that the man involved was having severe mental health issues, and was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

He was combative with officers, Sharoom said.

"It required upwards of seven, eight police officers to apprehend this person," he said.

However, the man was not seriously injured, and police officers involved got out with only some minor strains. All were back at work on Monday, Sharoom said.

The man was taken to hospital and was held for psychiatric assessment.

One officer on scene showed a large clasp knife to neighbours and indicated it had been in the man's possession.

Sharoom confirmed he was the same man who was involved in a standoff that resulted in the building being evacuated on July 1.

Officers were called to the building at about 6 a.m.

One resident said he was worried for the other tenants.

"My concern is, is this guy going to be allowed back in the building again?" said Cran Campbell.

He said people with mental health issues needed treatment, but shouldn't be in places where they could endanger others.
