Construction crews should not hamper parents who are picking up and dropping off their children at , 91原创 City mayor Ted Schaffer said.

Schaffer called it a 鈥渢raffic snarl鈥� that is 鈥渢otally unacceptable,鈥� during Monday鈥檚 (May 8) council meeting.

The mayor was reacting to a number of complaints about the roadwork currently underway outside the school near 201 Street and 48 Avenue from parents who said the construction activity is making it hard to pick up and drop off children and may even pose a safety hazard.

One parent鈥檚 email, released by the mayor, described the situation as 鈥渧ery distressing,鈥� said the road was 鈥減ock-marked鈥� with large holes and asked the city to get the contractor 鈥渢o maintain it better than they currently are.鈥�

Schaffer directed City staff to check the site every single day if needed to make sure safety and road maintenance issues are addressed.

鈥淚f the city needs an inspector to sit on the curb, it will happen,鈥� Schaffer said.

The 48 Avenue Improvement Project involves widening 48 Avenue on the north side from 200 to 201 Streets to allow for sidewalks and bike lanes as well as rebuilding the road with new gravels and asphalt.

The project is expected to be completed within two months subject to weather delays.

An online notice on the City website said there 鈥渨ill be traffic delays due to the construction activity and sections of single lane traffic will be required with detours 鈥� temporary parking restrictions may be required for portions of the work.鈥�
