With the cost of living skyrocketing, especially the climbing price of gas, it鈥檚 becoming more difficult for many people to make ends meet.

It鈥檚 even harder for single moms who are usually already stretched thin. 

Aldergrove's Church in the Valley hosts the Acts of Kindness ministry, run by church members and local volunteers, which offers free oil changes to pre-registered single moms in need twice a year. 

It's latest was held on Sunday, June 16, where more than 50 vehicles had their oil changed by volunteers. 

Sancho Gelb, a member of the church, has been volunteering his self-taught mechanical skills for 15 years. 

"It's such a big need for these single moms. This maybe is the only chance they have to do an oil change, and so it's so important... it's one less thing for them to worry about," Gelb told The Star. 

Gelb's expertise came from working on his own vehicles throughout his life, and he said people of any and all different skill levels and ages are needed for this twice-a-year event helping single moms. 

"Whether you have expertise or not, we have a place for people to help." 

Lead volunteer overseeing the church's oil change event was Elias Samano, who said the majority of volunteers were new faces this year. 

He said it's a great way for high school students to get experience over the summer with a mentor. 

"We are always looking for more volunteers," Samano noted.

The next free oil change event by the AOK ministry is held in fall. Samano expects it to be in October but a date hasn't been scheduled yet.

The church has been hosting the free oil changes for more than 20 years, expanding the program to include more offerings through the years.
