Cadet Warrant Officer Dylan Parmar has attended Remembrance Day ceremonies for four years.

His first ceremony was in 2019 as part of the cadet program, and while not mandatory, it is a key experience for youth.

鈥淢y first impression was that everyone who took part in the parade were honoured to be there, and that the cadets who were participating were part of an organization that fosters discipline and commitment to observing long standing traditions to commemorate the lives of fallen soldiers,鈥 he shared.

Parmar found he really enjoyed the cadet program, particularly its activities like hiking, canoeing, and camping.

鈥淎s I started to get more involved, I wanted to take on more responsibility and become a leader and mentor to the younger cadets,鈥 he said.

For a third year in a row, the now 16-year-old senior cadet will stand guard at the cenotaph in 91原创 City during the ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11.

鈥淚 believe it鈥檚 important for young people to participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies as it demonstrates to the community that we are united, and by gathering on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year to show our respect for those who fought for the freedoms of Canada,鈥 Parmar said.

Some ways for young people to participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies is by wearing a poppy, observing local ceremonies in-person or online, volunteering to assist with a ceremony, or join a local cadet corps to participate in a parade, Parmar suggested.

鈥淸This program] is a great way to experience new things, meet new people, and gain valuable skills that you will use throughout the rest of your life,鈥 he said.

The senior cadet is part of the Seaforth Highlanders Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in 91原创, and said he鈥檚 made new friends locally and nationally.

The 91原创 City ceremony takes place at 10:50 a.m. at the cenotaph in Douglas Park.
