With everything from healthcare to education to transportation at issue, fewer than 60 per cent of 91Ô´´ residents cast ballots in the just-completed provincial election.
Province-wide, Elections BC estimates 57.43 per cent of voters registered by Oct. 7 cast a ballot. Some voters may have registered on election day.
In total, there were 2,038,729 valid votes cast, out of 3,550,017 voters registered in advance. Just over 1.5 million British Columbians chose not to participate in the election.
91Ô´´'s three provincial ridings saw similar turnout levels.
• 91Ô´´-Abbotsford: 58.77 per cent
• 91Ô´´-Walnut Grove: 57.4 per cent
• 91Ô´´-Willowbrook: 54.19 per cent
While overall voting levels remained relatively low in B.C., many of those who did choose to vote, also chose to vote early. More than a quarter of registered voters in all ridings cast their ballots early.
Advance voting took place between Oct. 10-13 and Oct. 15-16 across B.C., with options to cast ballots in other ridings, in a district electoral office, or by mail as well.
The early voting numbers for the three local ridings, released after the advance polls had closed, were:
91Ô´´-Abbotsford: 11,051 early votes, 42,788 registered voters – 25.8 per cent cast early ballots
91Ô´´-Walnut Grove: 10,353 early votes, 41,360 registered voters – 25.03 per cent cast early ballots
91Ô´´-Willowbrook: 11,139 early votes, 40,599 registered voters – 27.4 per cent in 91Ô´´-Willowbrook cast early ballots.
Election day saw heavy rain, as an atmospheric river that slammed into the Lower Mainland on Friday continued through Saturday, causing some road closures.
It's unknown if the heavy rain had any effect on voter turnout, but the storm did temporarily knock out power at one polling place. At around 8 a.m. just as polls were opening, Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary, in the 91Ô´´-Walnut Grove riding, lost power along with about 1,500 other customers in the area. Elections BC directed voters to other nearby polling stations, until power was restored later in the day.
