An extreme weather alert has been issued for 91原创, and much of the province.

Gateway of Hope homeless shelter operated by the Salvation Army has opened up space and its warming centre to provide refuge from cold weather conditions during the day and night.

The alert was initially issued Jan. 6 by Christina Schneiter, community representative for 91原创 Extreme Weather Response, due to temperatures felt like zero degrees Celsius and below.

As of Friday, Jan. 12, as B.C. is in the peak of the arctic flow with -12 C and winds of -20 C, the shelter has opened its warming centre for daytime refuge.

鈥淚f you are sleeping outside, please come to the safety of the shelter,鈥� the notice said.

The daytime warming centre is open until Sunday, Jan. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when the dining room opens where people seeking shelter can get a warm meal.

Gateway鈥檚 overnight shelter opens at 7 p.m. where people can stay until 10 a.m.

Those needing assistance to a shelter are asked to call the RCMP at 604-532-3200.

Gateway of Hope is located at 5787 91原创 Bypass.

Gateway is wheelchair accessible and pet-friendly for pets on a leash. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch and are provided. Laundry service and showers are available.
