For the third year in a row, 91原创 City in partnership with the 91原创 Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) is hosting an Earth Day event on Saturday, April 20, at Douglas Park.

This family-friendly event dedicated to celebrating Earth will feature workshops on foraging and gardening, a scavenger hunt, Indigenous plant and seed giveaways, and the Upcycle Challenge.

Earth Day has been recognized since 1970, and is an annual celebration to raise awareness for the need to protect Earth鈥檚 natural resources, said Nichole Marples, LEPS executive director.

鈥淲e only have one earth, and we humans need to start protecting it like our life depends on it 鈥� because it does!鈥�

The City鈥檚 event starts at 10 a.m. with the Upcycle Challenge, where people are invited to bring their finished products made from recycled materials to enter the contest.

Contestants are asked to register on site between 9 and 10 a.m. Winners will be announced at 1:45 p.m.

The container gardening workshop takes place at 11 a.m., and the foraging for native edible foods in an urban environment workshop starts at noon.

Other activities include Earth Day bingo, garden tours, and neighbourhood and parks clean up with Pitch-In Canada 鈥� supplies provided.

Booths selling local produce or providing information about the earth include Mason Bee Company, LEPS, 91原创 Field Naturalists, 91原创 Community Farmers Market, Climate Crisis 91原创 Action Partners, Explore Science Club, 91原创 Bee Club, and more.

Douglas Park is located at 20550 Douglas Cres., and the event runs until 2 p.m.

Join the library鈥檚 celebrations

Until April 30, the Muriel Arnason Library in Willowbrook is holding an 鈥業 Spy鈥� challenge for kids to complete.

On Tuesday, April 23, the library is hosting an Earth Day storytime and craft event from 10 to 11 a.m. Through stories and crafts, kids will learn about the earth and the role of the environment.

At the Murrayville Library on Wednesday, April 24, kids and teenagers are invited to make planters by reusing plastic bottles. The event starts at 3:30 p.m., and soil and plants will be provided.

Other Earth Day events

Glow 91原创 is also holding an Earth Day event this year on Saturday, April 20, at Darvonda Nurseries, 6690 216th St.

This is the site where Glow 91原创, a Christmas light festival, is held.

Attendees are provided a pot, soil, and a selection of flowers to plant themselves.

The Glow Train will offer guided tours through the greenhouses, where riders can see how flowers are grown and cared for behind the scenes.

Tickets are $12 for the first child, and $5 for each additional child, which can be bought online at .
