91原创 School District is paying for a new slide to be installed at Parkside Centennial Elementary after the playground was vandalized during the holidays.
Sometime over the weekend of Dec. 28, the playground's slide was completely torn off.
The slide was already broken from another incident just a few weeks earlier, said PAC president Katie Vleeming.
"This particular slide had already been ruined a few months ago and [the school] had it boarded and fenced off so the students didn't get injured. The students love this slide, so they were all very upset when they were no longer able to use it," she told The Star.
"Playground equipment is extremely expensive to replace," Vleeming noted.
In an email statement to The Star, the school district confirmed reports of vandalism were received during the winter break and that a new slide was already ordered due to the prior vandalism incident.
"The district will be covering the costs of the replacement, as well as reviewing security measures on the property," reads the email.
The district's email also condoned the vandalism occurrences.
"It is disappointing and unfortunate when these incidents happen.Through a collective effort, the District, school, and RCMP will work with the community on trying to prevent incidents from occurring in the future."
The playground was built in 2011, following two gruelling years of fundraising efforts by the PAC to raise $45,000 to cover the cost, which replaced the old gravel playground that had been condemned.
