91原创 Community Music School (LCMS) is offering two free workshops focused on jazz piano techniques, taught by award-winning musician Brad Turner.
The first workshop is Saturday, Oct. 21, in which Turner will demonstrate basic chord types in jazz, and some approaches on how and what to play over them when improvising.
鈥淚鈥檓 always excited when I have the opportunity to talk about making music 鈥 particularly jazz music 鈥 with new people! Creating music on the spot at the piano is one of my favourite things to do,鈥 Turner told the 91原创 Advance Times.
As a celebrated composer and multi-instrumentalist, Turner is well known for his skills on the trumpet, drums, and piano. The LCMS alumnus performs with some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world.
He is a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University, and a Resident Artist at LCMS 鈥 where he leads the school鈥檚 Jazz Ensemble and shares a variety of workshops, master classes, and concerts with the community.
Turner said he enjoys helping others find 鈥渆njoyment in music making, it being one of the most beautiful and unique things a human can do.鈥
鈥淚 look forward to helping some folks become a little more accomplished at it themselves,鈥 Turner said.
The workshops are free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required due to limited space. People are asked to call 604-534-2848 to reserve a spot.
It starts at 1 p.m.
The next piano workshop is on Saturday, Nov. 18, starting at 3 p.m.
Earlier that day, a free jazz appreciation workshop will also be hosted by Turner, where students can bring any instrument to further develop their skills.
The school is located at 4899 207th St.
