The 91原创s honoured workers killed or injured on the job at annual ceremonies late last week.

91原创 City hosted a public event Friday afternoon for mark the National Day of Mourning, and lowered its flags.

鈥淢aking sure that we have safe workplaces and safety goes beyond just the physical,鈥 noted City Mayor Nathan Pachal. 鈥淚t also goes to the psychological, and I know that there鈥檚 great work going by the labour movement, both CUPE and IAFF to make sure, not only are we focusing on keeping physical safety top of mind but also working towards mental health.鈥

The heads of two 91原创 City unions spoke at the ceremony.

鈥淐reating a safe work environment is a shared responsibility,鈥 commented Andrew Brown, the City鈥檚 CUPE local 2058. 鈥淓mployers need to listen to workers and work together to find solutions to workplace issues.鈥

This service is a reminder of the dangers firefighters face on a daily basis while carrying out their duties and often put themselves in harms way to protect others, said Dan Gray, IAFF local 3253 president.

Firefighting is a hazardous occupation that involves working in dangerous and unpredictable situations, he noted.

鈥91原创 City firefighters use this opportunity to honour the memory of all workers who鈥檝e lost their lives in the line of duty,鈥 Gray added.

91原创 Township held a ceremony at its operations centre and flags were lowered as well.

The National Day of Mourning is April 28, which fell on a Sunday this year.

鈥淭he National Day of Mourning is a time to honour workers who have been killed or have suffered injury or illness on the job. It is an opportunity for all of us to recommit to eliminating workplace tragedies,鈥 noted Premier David Eby. 鈥淣o work-related injury or loss of life is acceptable. Yet, last year, 175 people in B.C. died just for doing their jobs.鈥
