91原创鈥檚 St. Joseph鈥檚 Catholic Church is again preparing scores of turkeys and tons of fresh cranberry sauce for its 29th annual Christmas Day dinner.
On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, the church will open its doors at 4:30 p.m. to welcome any and all members of the community who need a warm and friendly place to enjoy a festive meal. Dinner is served at 5 p.m.
Kathy Gendron has volunteered at the church鈥檚 annual dinner for five years, and enjoys the family-like environment it gives.
鈥淓veryone deserves a Christmas dinner. And this has been as close to a family-oriented dinner as we could make it, [there鈥檚] such love and kindness,鈥 she said.
The event is particularly aimed at feeding seniors who might be alone, people who are homeless, and people struggling financially.
Marg Rodrigues, a parishioner at St. Joseph鈥檚 for 10 years, said the dinner is her highlight of each year.
鈥淣o matter your financial situation, your family situation, what you wear, if your walking or not, just please know you are welcome,鈥 Rodrigues said.
Dinner includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and mixed vegetables. An assortment of desserts will also be served, including a variety of pies. All food was donated by local community members.
The free Christmas dinners started in the late 1990s by two parish organizations: the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Women鈥檚 League, explained former parish administrator Laura McNally.
鈥淭he volunteers were brought together by the pastor, Father Joe Ponti, because some people in those days had no place to go for Christmas. We didn鈥檛 want them to be left alone,鈥 she said.
Seniors who need a ride to attend the dinner can RSVP by calling the parish office at 604-534-3303 until Friday, Dec. 22.
Office hours are Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
St. Joseph鈥檚 Church is located at 20676 Fraser Hwy.
