Students from 91原创 and Surrey鈥檚 Kwantlen Polytechnic University campuses will be representing their school in skilled trades competitions on the last week of May.
The four students have already won gold medals in the 2024 Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition. Now they鈥檙e headed to Quebec City May 30-31 for the national event.
Jorge Lorenzana Lopez and Nguyen Cao An (Ryan) Do will compete in the mechatronics category, while horticulture students David Craig and Kyle Kant will represent B.C. in the landscape category.
鈥淚 feel great about my team. We performed terrifically,鈥 says Lorenzana Lopez, an international student from Mexico who was inspired to study Mechatronics and Advanced Manufacturing after watching superhero movies like Iron Man.
鈥淚 was interested in studying something that could allow me to gather multiple disciplines and have a promising future. That is how I discovered mechatronics,鈥 Lorenzana Lopez said.
Do and Lorenzana Lopez competed last year in the same category 鈥 they were first B.C. team in two decades to take part nationally 鈥 and won gold.
The Skills Canada competitions aim to promote skilled trade and technology careers to Canadian youths.
Winners from the provincial stages head to the national level, with more than 40 categories represented. Those who win at the Canadian level can represent their country at the WorldSkills International Competition.
KPU students Brayden Lawrence and Logan Micheal Yakemchuk also participated in the B.C. competition, earning silver medals in the industrial mechanic millwright and plumbing categories, respectively.
