The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) said there are no grounds to believe 91原创 RCMP officers were responsible for a fatal crash that followed an attempted traffic stop on 16 Avenue last year.
The decision was announced on the IIO's website on Friday, Feb. 7.
The incident took place in the early morning hours of March 18, 2024, when a police officer tried to pull over a black Mazda heading east.
The Mazda didn't stop, and instead continued east, crashing into another vehicle at the intersection of 16 Avenue and 264 Street in South Aldergrove.
The driver and passenger in the Mazda were rushed to hospital, where the male passenger died of his injuries on March 19.
The female driver was treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to the IIO's decision.
The director of the IIO has reviewed evidence including civilian witness statements, medical records, analysis of the collision scene, and police reports, and decided that there are no grounds to believe the officer who tried to pull over the Mazda committed an offence.
A full report about the incident has not yet been released by the IIO because of an ongoing police investigation into the same incident, the IIO's statement said.
The IIO looks into all deaths and serious injuries that involve police officers in B.C.
That includes everything from police shootings to car crashes to medical emergencies during arrests.
If the IIO determines there is grounds to believe an offence was committed, it turns the file over to the B.C. Prosecution Service to determine if criminal charges should be laid.
