From LEGO to Dungeons & Dragons, Aldergrove library offers variety of games

After school events in demand for kids and teens

Ellis, 6, of Aldergrove said he loves LEGO more than anyone else.

His mom brought him and his younger brother, Denny, 2, to the Aldergrove Library to borrow some books and give the boys time to build LEGO together on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

LEGO, the popular plastic building blocks toy sets, has been at the Aldergrove Library for many years.

Librarian Erica Braumberger said the LEGO Club at the library sees high engagement and involvement among kids.

鈥淚t has a low barrier to access but a high pay off, because the kids just love it. They get really engaged and invested in their project,鈥 she said.

She鈥檚 seen kids full of pride when they see their LEGO creations on a shelf in the library鈥檚 glass display box.

鈥淵ou can really see the enthusiasm,鈥 she chuckled.

Other libraries in 91原创 offer the LEGO Club too, and Braumberger said the building blocks have become a staple for kids at the libraries.

Braumberger said the library has found other ways to incorporate LEGO into its events, such as through the August STEM Club last year where kids built a small robot or windmill of LEGO and program it to move.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 the great thing about LEGO is that you can guide it and have parameters to work inside of to inspire that creative moment, but if you put LEGO in front of a kid they鈥檒l build something,鈥 she commented.

While the first LEGO Club event after the winter break was a bit slower, Braumberger said she often sees up to 20 kids during the hour its open.

The event is drop-in with no registration required.

The club is weekly on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the .

鈥淭he LEGO Club really invites interactions. Once you put a kid next to another kid and they鈥檙e working on a creative task together it seems to become so much easier for them to reach out to each other to work on something together,鈥 Braumberger said.

To provide further opportunities for youth interaction, Braumberger has organized four Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) 鈥 a table-top role-playing game commonly set in a fantasy world resembling the Middle Ages 鈥 events at the Aldergrove Library in the coming months, starting Saturday, Jan. 27.

There are two events for ages 12 to 14, and two events for ages 15 to 19.

After a trial run last summer for ages 13 to 18, Braumberger heard back that some kids 12 years old wanted to play D&D as well.

鈥淭here were a lot of younger people interested in playing, but I thought that the older kids also deserve an opportunity to still have their own time to connect with each other and meet people with similar interests,鈥 she explained.

D&D is tricky to get into on your own with no experience, Braumberger said, so she will have an experienced Dungeon Master 鈥 who runs the campaign and ensures the story flows 鈥 to lead the the sessions.

There are many reasons D&D is beneficial for kids and teens to participate in, she said.

鈥淚t has so many literacy-based elements, it has numeracy with math, [fosters] teamwork, it鈥檚 collaborative 鈥 it has so many of these skills we want to bring to people.鈥

Registration is required for the D&D events. The first event is full, but spots remain on the sessions scheduled for February, March, and April.

Braumberger said they plan four months at a time, but is hopeful the D&D events will return for the summer.

Kids and teens interested can register online at and search for the Aldergrove Library.
