From seismic upgrades to a new elementary school to a modular school expansion, 91原创 school board got an update on its biggest ongoing projects on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Secretary-treasurer Brian Iseli said the four major projects are:

鈥 Seismic upgrade and expansion at Peter Ewart Middle School

鈥 Expansion at 91原创 Secondary (LSS)

鈥 New school in North East Latimer, in the Willoughby area

鈥 Modular expansion to Richard Buplitt Elementary

The Peter Ewart upgrade will also expand the school鈥檚 capacity from 625 students up to 900 students, and the district has contributed $1 million of the projected $32.5 million cost.

Phase one is wrapping up, and phase two of the upgrades has already started, Iseli said. The change means that the next group of students to be moved out to portables while work is underway has been relocated.

At LSS, the expansion will add 300 seats to bring the school鈥檚 total capacity up to 1,100 students. The district is also contributing $1 million to that project. The builder is currently estimating total costs, which will be sent to the Ministry of Education for approval in February.

Construction is to start in July, with completion in October 2025.

91原创鈥檚 next elementary school will be built in North East Latimer in Willoughby, with a capacity of 555 students and up to 80 childcare spaces in a learning centre.

Construction is hopefully to start in March, and to be completed in September 2025, and the total cost is being estimated now, to be sent to the Ministry of Education.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a very ambitious plan, with everyone doing everything they can to have that school open for September 2025,鈥 said Iseli.

The Richard Bulpitt Elementary modular is expected to add six classrooms and 150 student spaces, with work to start during spring break in March, relocating portables. The new module will be connected by a breezeway.

Each floor will have three classrooms and a washroom, and there will be an individual lift, a sort of small personal elevator, as well.

Trustee Joel Neufeld asked Iseli if the province was looking to do more of these modular projects, and Iseli said it looked like that was possible.

The province was looking for ways to provide more student spaces, faster, and was waiting for district feedback on the current projects, which have been spread across the province and include a variety of projects of different sizes.

鈥淭hey realize there is a severe lack of space in a fair number of districts in this province now,鈥 Iseli said.
