Fort 91原创 is about to get a new look, as the local community association has unveiled its new street banner to be hung on lamp posts sometime in the coming weeks.
Following a competitive process with more than 20 local artists submitting their work, 91原创 artist Jungmin Ko鈥檚 work was selected by the Fort 91原创 Community Association to decorate the streets, said chairperson Andy Schildhorn.
Ko鈥檚 banner design features symbols of the environment through trees, a river, salmon, and cranberries, and historic landmarks like the Fort watchtower and railroad station.
鈥淛ungmin鈥檚 art captures the heart of the community,鈥� Schildhorn commented.
The new banners also have cultural significance of the Kwantlen First Nation by including welcome messages in both Halq鈥檈m茅ylem (the Upriver dialect) and h蓹n虛q虛蓹min虛蓹m虛 (the Downriver dialect) of the broader language Halkomelem.
On the poles, the Upriver dialect 脡y kw鈥檈s 茅m矛 and Downriver dialect 蕯蓹m虛 i ce:p kw蓹迟虫wil蓹m are featured as well to 鈥渆ncourage reflection on the connections between the land, its people, and their languages,鈥� Schildhorn explained.
鈥淲e are honored to work with Jungmin Ko and Fern Gabriel on this significant community initiative,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hese banners not only beautify our streets but also serve as a reminder of our rich heritage, diverse community, and the natural splendor that surrounds us.鈥�

The previous banners have been displayed in Fort 91原创 for about seven years, Schildhorn estimated, and the association is now looking for ideas on what to do with them.
