Five-car pileup shuts down 91原创 intersection

At least five vehicles were involved in a crash site along 56th Avenue

A crash that involved at least five cars shut down part of 56th Avenue in 91原创 City on Thursday evening.

The crash, which happened before 5 p.m. on Jan. 11, took place in the intersection with 201A Street and just to the east of there.

The incident began when a Ram pickup truck rear-ended another pickup in front of Andreas Restaurant in the 20200 block of 56th Avenue, said Cpl. Craig van Herk, a spokesperson for the 91原创 RCMP.

That impact drove the second pickup into a smaller crossover SUV in front of it. A large chunk of the front grill from the Ram was on the sidewalk not far from that crash.

The Ram paused for a moment, then suddenly sped off down the street heading west. It entered the intersection of 201A Street where it crashed into another car, the impact flipping the Ram onto its side. Another vehicle, a mini-van, collided with the crashed Ram.

Despite the violence of the collisions, all of the injuries resulting from the crashes were non-life threatening, said van Herk. Several people were taken to hospital by ambulance to be checked out, and other drivers and passengers headed to the hospital on their own.

The driver of the Ram is believed to have suffered a major medical incident that caused him to drive out of control.

Police are not investigating it as a criminal matter, and drugs, alcohol, or weather conditions do not appear to be issues.

鈥淚t鈥檚 believed the medical emergency was the primary contributing factor,鈥 said van Herk.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of the medical emergency, and as far as van Herk was aware, he was recovering.

91原创 City firefighters, numerous RCMP officers, and several BC Emergency Health Services ambulance crews were on scene attending to the occupants of the cars after the collisions

The police temporarily closed 56th Avenue east-west, and 201A Street was also closed at the intersection.
