If anyone saw, or heard, a fire truck in their neighbourhood this month, it was the local friendly firefighters giving out candy canes and spreading holiday cheer.

Residents of Aldergrove, Walnut Grove, Brookswood, and Fort 91ԭ were treated to Christmas music and candy cane treats handed out by local firefighters from Friday to Monday, Dec. 15 to 18. Firefighters also visited Murrayville on Saturday, Dec. 23.

Firefighters from all six of the Township’s firehalls take part in the events, which see them slowly drive through their local neighbourhoods, playing Christmas music, escorting Santa Claus, and collecting donations for local food banks and other charities.

Eight big totes of food and $600 cash in donations were collected during the annual 91ԭ Township firefighter Candy Cane Run event.

In previous years, more than $1,000 has been collected in a single neighbourhood.

The Candy Cane Run has occurred on a regular annual basis in Aldergrove since 2019, when local firefighter Mark Butterworth started up the event at the community’s firehall.

Firefighters, with Santa, handed out candy canes and collected non-perishable food items and cash donations for the 91ԭ Food Bank on 203rd Street. They were accompanied by Christmas music playing from the fire trucks, as it followed the merrymakers as they walked through the neighbourhood.

Zach Funk, a director of the Aldergrove-based Township of 91ԭ Firefighters’ Charities that organizes the annual event, thanked residents for being “very generous and supporting us with providing some much-needed food for the food bank.”

“Thank you to the community for coming and supporting us and the cause of raising food and money for those who are hungry and less privileged than us. We can come together and make a difference,” he said.
