Everyone invited to 91原创's overdose awareness event

Overdose Awareness Day is Saturday, Aug. 31 and a local event is happening in Douglas Park

Several groups have come together to help the community better understand the overdose crisis, hosting a special event on Aug. 31 which includes a candle light vigil.

91原创's 2024 Overdose Awareness Day event is at Douglas Park, 20550 Douglas Cres., between 6 and 9 p.m. on Saturday.

"We believe this event will provide valuable insights and support to our community," said Daniel Snyder, 91原创 Overdose Response Community Action Team chair and project coordinator.

The Community Action Team is the organizer with support from the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society, community groups, and local residents.

"Recognized as one of the most impactful and comprehensive events in the region over the past three years, this year鈥檚 event aims to continue raising even greater awareness and support for those affected by the never ending overdose crisis," he said.

There's a free community barbecue hosted by the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society.

The event includes a resource fair and naloxone training. Local organizations working on the front lines will be in attendance to connect with community members and highlight their services. More than 20 groups or agencies are slated to attend.
Guest speakers with lived experience will share their stories and perspectives with stories of resilience, hope and the memories of loved ones. The Hidden Voices band will perform live music.

The Saturday, Aug. 31 event begins with a welcome and awareness walk followed by the stage events and music starting at 7 p.m. and the memorial and candle light vigil at 8:15 p.m.

At the event will be a dedicated space to remember those lost to overdoses, featuring a memorial activity and candlelight vigil at dusk.
"91原创 Overdose Awareness Day is a vital platform for education, support, and community engagement," Snyder explained. "By attending, participants can learn more about the overdose crisis, discover ways to support loved ones, and join in the collective effort to combat stigma and save lives."
