A program started by students to help nourish 91原创 youth who would otherwise go hungry on the weekends, is getting even more financial support.

Recently, the district PAC donated $5,200 towards the Weekend Fuelbag program. The parent council made a presentation in late April announcing the donation. Suzanne Perreault, DPAC President, presented the cheque.

鈥淭heir support is greatly appreciated and will go a long way to help feed students in need,鈥 said Ken Hoff, spokesperson for 91原创 School District.

The program provides bags of food to middle and high school students who otherwise may go without over the weekends. It was founded by two students, Brady Lumsden, a grade 10 student at Walnut Grove, and Emma Schulz, a grade 12 student at Mountain.

Originally, it helped 16 middle and high school students at R.E. Mountain and Walnut Grove, as well as at Yorkson Creek Middle School.

Each bag contains two breakfasts, two lunches, drinks and snacks to tide the students over the weekend. The bags are picked up confidentially at the schools.

But even though the program was helping kids, funding was lost after one sponsor grocery store announced it was closing.

The students went public with a plea for help to keep the program growing.

Since November, numerous businesses have stepped up to help.

One of the new sponsors, the Murrayville IGA, plans to adopt three schools for the remainder of the school year.

The other is Brookswood alumnus Graham Robins, at A&A Customs Brokers, who is donating $800 a month to the program for Brookswood and H.D. Stafford schools.
