Students at a 91原创 Christian secondary school are taking on a fundraising challenge via some friendly competition.
Teacher Lydia Driegen's Business Computer Applications class at Credo Christian High School has been split into two teams, each of which has launched their own projects with the goal of raising $3,500 for Safe Families Canada.
One group is organizing an Amazing Race-style challenge that will take place around 91原创 on Feb. 22, while the other team is organizing a gala dinner to take place in Yarrow on Feb. 21.
Safe Families Canada is a faith-based non-profit that finds places for children in their communities, as an alternative to the provincial foster care system. The charity also helps with other childcare based needs like volunteer babysitters for single mothers.
The teams are aiming to fundraise both through sponsorships of their events, and by selling tickets.
Amara DeHaan and Asher Van Delft are on the gala dinner team, and neither had ever tried to drum up sponsor money before, but they've been fairly successful.
"I like talking to people," Van Delft said, and he's been putting that to use reaching out to local businesses.
"We have a lot of generous people in our community that are helping out a lot," said DeHaan.
She said that they're currently focused on ticket sales and figuring out the entertainment for their gala dinner, which may include a string quartet.
The rivalry between the two teams has been pretty friendly, they said, but it's still a rivalry.
"I have confidence that we'll win," said Van Delft.
The 91原创 race event will have eight stations around the community, where families taking part each have to complete an activity, like a puzzle, before they can move on to the next station. Whoever completes all the activities the fastest wins a prize.
Students Kayla Whiteley and Tydus Riddle, who are on the race organizing team, said it will cost $40 per vehicle to enter the competition.
The whole route is expected to take about three and a half hours, said Whiteley.
Riddle said the biggest challenge in getting sponsorships for the team was getting answers back from busy companies.
Their team is now recruiting volunteers to run the stations and the staggered start from Credo Christian Elementary on the day of the event.
"I'm nervous for how it's actually going to go," Whiteley said.
Each team has a website for their event, with information on participation and tickets. To find both websites, visit .
The overall goal of the project isn't just to determine a winner, said Driegen. For her, it's an opportunity for the students to see how they can create value in their community, and the support of the local business community for charitable efforts.
