A high-speed crash that trapped one occupant of a car closed down 200th Street near 72nd Avenue in 91原创 for several hours early Monday morning, Oct. 2.

91原创 Township assistant fire chief Dale Steeple said shortly after midnight, crews were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in the southbound lane of 200th.

One person had to be rescued by fire crews using extraction tools, Steeple said.

鈥淭heir leg was trapped in in the firewall in the front of the vehicle, so the crews did remove that individual and transported them to the BC ambulance that was waiting,鈥� Steeple explained.

The entrapped person was taken to hospital.

Fire crews also extinguished a fire in of one of the damaged vehicles, Steeple said.

91原创 RCMP Cpl. Craig van Herk said while investigators believe speed was a factor, 鈥渨e don鈥檛 have anything at this point to confirm that it was a street race.鈥�

鈥淲e don鈥檛 have the confirmation or evidence to determine yet the relationship between the drivers, the vehicles, and the people that were all at the scene,鈥� van Herk told the 91原创 Advance Times.

A Chrysler 300 ran into the back of an Audi while heading south on 200th Street, then lost control and hit a tree, van Herk said.

Occupants of a third vehicle, a Honda, witnessed the crash.

鈥淎nd then there were other vehicles that stopped to assist, so there were a number of people around,鈥� and investigators are looking into 鈥渉ow, or if, they actually are relate,鈥� van Herk elaborated.

In addition to the person who had to be freed by firefighters, a few others suffered what were considered to be relatively minor injuries, van Herk said.

Southbound traffic was blocked off on 200th between 72nd and 68th Avenues while investigators were on scene.

Drivers were being advised to take 192nd or 202B as a detour.

Two vehicles, one with extensive front-end damage, were seen being towed from the scene around 8:30 a.m. when traffic barriers were taken down, reopening the southbound lane.
