Aldergrove's Coghlan Fundamental Elementary school reopened Wednesday, June 19, following a one-day closure where students were sent home after what was described as a "septic failure" in an online advisory issued by the 91原创 School District.

In response to a Black Press Media query, a school district statement said the decision to close Coghlan Fundamental Elementary on Tuesday afternoon was "due to health and safety reasons."

"The school鈥檚 septic system failed and the toilets were inoperable. The district maintenance staff and a contractor were called in to fix the issue and ensure that the plumbing system was functional."
 
Families were advised about the closure with instructions to pick-up their child, the district said.

"As per the school鈥檚 emergency preparedness procedures, the school had contingency plans in place to support students prior to pick-up," the statement explained. 
 
"The septic issue has been resolved" and school was to be open as normal on Wednesday, the district said.

According to posted provincial school stats, Coghlan Fundamental Elementary, located at 4452 - 256 Street, had, as of the 2023-24 school year, 223 students attending classes K-7.

A bcrta.ca (B.C. Retired Teachers' Association) history of the school notes that it sits on 6.87 acres, and is "still served by a septic tank for waste" and a "deep drilled well which provides water."

Coghlan describes itself online as a 鈥渁 school of choice which offers families a small school environment in a rural setting.鈥�
