A Christmas Day crash in 91原创 involving two vehicles was found not to be connected to a theft earlier that evening at a nearby construction site, investigators determined.
Emergency crews were called to reports of a multi-vehicle collision that occurred on the 91原创-Surrey border, in the 19600-block of 80th Avenue on Monday, Dec. 25, at about 6:35 p.m.
The two vehicles, a Dodge pickup truck and Honda CR-V, sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene. No injuries were reported.
鈥淐ontributing causes have not been determined, although speed is believed to be a factor,鈥 91原创 RCMP Cpl. Craig van Herk told the 91原创 Advance Times.
91原创 RCMP had that section of road in the Willoughby neighbourhood cordoned off for several hours after, to facilitate their investigation.
two suspects were reported 鈥渇leeing鈥 the scene of the crash on foot. Officers and the K9 unit were called in on a search, which Leeson said proved fruitful a short time after the crash.
Two adult men were arrested and taken into custody, but were released not long after.
Shortly before the collision, a theft was reported at a construction site and the alleged suspect vehicle matched the Dodge pickup truck involved in the crash.
However, upon further investigation, police determined a theft had not occurred and was a miscommunication between contractors.
On the day of the crash, there were unconfirmed reports on social media that the incident involved shots fired.
91原创 RCMP Sgt. Joe Leeson clarified that to be false.
In the meantime, Christmas night was busy for local police and firefighters due to the high winds.
Leeson noted Mounties were kept hopping with alarms calls caused by power failures. And he pointed to a few incidents in Walnut Grove in particular, where at least two commercial businesses were broken into while hydro was done.
Thieves, he said, took advantage of the numerous outages.
Forensic teams have combed over both locations and 鈥渟uspects are being developed,鈥 Leeson said.
Power was knocked out to a few thousand local homes overnight, due to the high winds knocking trees down across wires, BC Hydro reported.
