Cascades Casino in 91原创 is celebrating the Year of the Dragon in its annual Lunar New Year event on Saturday, Feb. 10.
A traditional lion dance ceremony and performance by the Fortune God are part of the event, which will be attended by 91原创 City Deputy Mayor Teri James, MLA Megan Dykeman, and councillors Leith White, Delaney Mack, Rosemary Wallace, and Paul Albreicht.
鈥淭he dance symbolizes good luck and the performance will be vivid and entertaining, accompanied by beating drums and clashing cymbals,鈥� said Raymond MacNeil, vice-president of operations, BC East of Gateway.
Last year鈥檚 event had about 300 guests, and MacNeil expects more than 350 due to 2024 being the Year of the Dragon.
鈥漀ot only is the Lion Dance one of the most important traditions of Chinese culture, but it has quickly brought great significance to our community here in 91原创,鈥� he added.
MacNeil explained that the for leafy greens in Cantonese sounds similar to the word for 鈥渂ecoming wealthy.鈥� So the lion dancers tear apart lettuce, which is 鈥渟pat鈥� into the audience to symbolize a blessing of prosperity in the new year.
The event has been running for more than 10 years, and begins at 1 p.m.
鈥淚 like seeing the excitement of guests, crowding around the dancers who are seen tearing apart lettuce,鈥� he said.
On the following day, Feb. 11, there will be a Lunar New Year brunch at 10 a.m., and a traditional red envelope and dragon key-chain giveaway 鈥� while supplies last. There will be a chance to win one of $88 and $8 free play prizes as well.
鈥淚t鈥檚 something that we look forward to each year, and brings with it happiness and a festive atmosphere,鈥� MacNeil said.
