Pipes have frozen and burst all across 91原创 since an arctic outflow arrived late last week, bringing freezing temperatures and windchill to the region.

The 91原创 Senior Resource Society鈥檚 centre on 51B Avenue is closed until further notice after a pipe burst and caused a flood in the facility, said executive director Kate Ludlam.

鈥淎 pipe burst just above our snooker room, so that room in particular has been affected,鈥� Ludlam explained.

The burst took place at about 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15.

鈥淚f this had happened in the middle of the night, I imagine the damage would have been much more severe,鈥� said Ludlam.

The damage has also affected two nearby washrooms. The snooker room itself likely needs to be gutted, and the tables may be a loss.

The centre has insurance, but they will have to figure out how to pay the $50,000 deductible, said Ludlam.

鈥淲e expect we鈥檒l be closed for the week,鈥� she said.

91原创 Meals on Wheels is helping with the centre鈥檚 lunch program. A skeleton crew was on hand, as many seniors had not seen online notices about the closure and were turning up for regular events and programming on Tuesday.

The adult day program, which operates out of a different building, was not affected.

Homes and businesses across 91原创 are suffering burst pipes, in what a local plumber said was the worst winter for this problem he鈥檚 ever seen.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had an emergency team of 15 guys working since Thursday,鈥� said Spencer Turley of Murrayville Plumbing and Heating.

Plumbers and restoration company crews are burning the midnight oil as they deal with everything from relatively minor leaks to catastrophic burst pipes.

Turley said he鈥檚 seen quite a few breaks and leaks in the sprinkler systems of apartment buildings that are 20 to 30 years old 鈥� the plumbing has stood up to every winter for the last few decades, but a combination of cold and wind chill affected it this year.

鈥淭his is the worst one that I鈥檝e been around for, from a work standpoint,鈥� he said.

About seven or eight homes he鈥檚 seen have suffered a sprinkler break in the ceiling that caused major damage to a home and its contents.

He said the key advice he would have for anyone would be to winterize their outdoor hose spigots.

Keeping pipes a bit warmer can help.

鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to leave the cupboard doors open and let the heat get in there,鈥� he said.

Although temperatures have risen slightly and the wind chill finally died down on the weekend, crews are still catching up.

Turley asked people to be patient 鈥� his plumbers are getting to bed at 1 a.m. and getting up at 6 a.m. again the next day.

鈥淭hese guys are working their tails off,鈥� he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e barely seen my kids in three days.鈥�

Although temperatures were finally rising by Tuesday, snow and possible freezing rain was in the forecast for the night of Jan. 16 and into Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Local firefighters were preparing for a busy few days.

Township firefighters were prepping their trucks for snow, and anticipating an increase in collisions.

鈥淥ne year we had 22 calls on the freeway in an hour,鈥� said deputy chief Russ Jenkins. 鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping that doesn鈥檛 happen again.鈥�

He advised people to stay home unless they absolutely needed to leave their houses during the expected snowfall.
