The annual province-wide Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off competition is returning to Krause Berry Farms on Saturday, Oct. 5. 

Last year's event drew 20 growers and almost 5,000 spectators, the biggest year yet, said organizer Kirstin Carley. 

Weigh-off time starts around 11 a.m., and contestants are expected to arrive between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

The winners will be announced around 2 p.m. 

"Giant (Atlantic) pumpkins, giant squash, largest field (regular) pumpkins, giant marrow, largest bushel gourds, longest gourds, giant tomatoes and largest watermelons, are weighed in the order of their estimated weight, lightest to heaviest, with the largest pumpkins being weighed last," explained Carley. 

Several giant pumpkins are expected to be brought in weighing more than 1,000 pounds. 

"There is one that is estimated to weigh over 2,000 pounds!" Carley exclaimed. 

Master carver Bruce Waugh will also be at the event until 4 p.m.

While it's the 10th year Krause Berry Farms has hosted the contest, this year is the 11th for the weigh-off. 

"[It] started off in 2013 as a passion project to share my husband, Scott Carley's, giant pumpkin growing process," Carley said. 

"Over the last 11 years, it has grown into something much bigger for the entire community of giant pumpkin growers in B.C."

She added that all funds raised go towards the next year. 

"This is a hobby, not a business," she noted.
