Bard in the Valley is cooling summer down with its production of 'The Winter's Tale' coming to the stage on July 4.
This redemptive but tragic story takes place across two time periods, following the devastating effects of suspicion and jealousy of a king and his kingdom. At the same time, the king's lost daughter is trying to find her place in the world.
The play follows the two stories and concludes with their connection in an unexpected redemption.
Directed by Dylan Coulter, who has always been drawn to the comedic plays from the second half of Shakepeare's career, this mixing of tragedy and comedy will hint at our ability to find humour in darkness and Shakepeare's understanding that comedy and tragedy are often separated by small but consequential choices.
"This play is structural curio, presenting a one-act tragedy followed by one-act comedy. It gives us some of the most memorable comedic characters of all of Shakepeare's career," said Coulter.
There will be dark dramatic scenes, speeches, music, magic moments, and is believed to be one of Shakepeare's more diverse plays, Coulter added.
"It has been such a joy to work on this messy masterpiece, and I can't wait for us to share it with you all this summer."
'The Winter's Tale' will be performed at Township 7 Winery from July 4 to 14.
