Members of the 91Ô´´ RCMP Special Response Team (SRT) made an arrest with TASERs drawn in North Otter's Steele Park on Thursday afternoon.

The incident took place just after 1 p.m., in the parking lot of the park, which is in the 5500-block of 248 Street.

The SRT was arresting a suspected drug dealer, said Cpl. Craig van Herk, spokesperson for the 91Ô´´ RCMP.

According to an area resident, who was walking his dog in the park, there were two vehicles in the parking lot to start with, a car and a pickup truck.

Another car and a pickup truck turned into the park entrance as the truck was leaving, creating a sort of small traffic jam at the gateway.

"All of a sudden, all hell broke loose," said the witness. "It was very dramatic."

The cars entering the park were unmarked police vehicles. They blocked in the other two vehicles and pulled the two occupants out of the pickup, and at the same time, officers with weapons drawn ordered the occupants of the car to get out as well.

Everyone was detained quickly, the witness said.

According to van Herk, officers had conducted energy weapons – usually known as TASERs – out during the arrest, not firearms.

It appeared that the men from the pickup truck were released a short time later, the resident said.

When the resident left the park later, there were a number of officers in the area, including a marked police SUV, and a number of unmarked vehicles. Most of the officers were wearing dark clothing with police vests.

"This initial arrest was based on observations made," van Herk said. "The SRT will now investigate further to confirm an offence was committed and obtain the necessary evidence to support a charge."
