Anti-cancer car show raises record-breaking $14k for 91Ô´´ girl

Old Farts Car Club annually raises funds to support a local family battling cancer

This year's anti-cancer car show by the Old Farts Car Club raised a record-breaking $14,188 for the family of seven-year-old Leilah from 91Ô´´ City.

The cause hits home for many members of the car club, and tears were shed as the cheque was presented to Leilah and her family at the Aldergrove legion on Saturday, July 20.

Through tears, organizer Marty Chapman said the donation "means a lot."

The annual car show has been held since Godfrey Hamon, an original member of the OFCC, passed away from cancer just a few months after being diagnosed.

Every year around July 13, Hamon's birthday, the club puts on a car show to help a cancer patient with their battle.

"It feels good to come together as a community to be able to help families struggling," Chapman said.

"We have all been affected by cancer in some way."

The show has raised more than $34,000, donated directly to cancer patients, in addition to funds raised this year.

This year was the first OFCC car show Leilah's family had been to, and mom Amanda said "it's been incredible to have support."

"We are so grateful. None of our family are here, so it's incredible that people are willing and wanting to give and is so supportive, I don't really have the words to properly articulate the feeling," she shared, asking for the family's last name not to be published for privacy.

Melanie Skocylas, mom of an Aldergrove family who was a former recipient of the car show, has been attending the annual car show ever since.

"People we didn't even know banded together to help a family, and we can't thank them enough. It's appreciated [during] such an uncertain time – it kept us above," she said.
