Two people arrested in 91Ô´´ by Surrey RCMP are suspected of having stolen $53,000 worth of high-value merchandise over a six month period, police say.
The suspects were allegedly targeting various retail stores for shoplifting, using sophisticated techniques to conceal the items and get them out without detection, said Surrey RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha.
Some methods involved the use of devices to block security alarm systems, Sangha said.
Items taken included high-end fragrances and athletic clothing.
The Surrey RCMP Community Response Unit investigated the Surrey thefts, and found links to similar thefts in Abbotsford and 91Ô´´.
On Feb. 20, the Surrey CRU arrested two people in 91Ô´´.
Nicoleta Rusu, 51, and Emil Marian Stan, 39, of Ontario, have each been charged with eight counts of theft – two counts of theft over $5,000, and six of theft under $5,000 – as well as one count each of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
Court records show the first alleged theft took place in July, followed by more incidents in November, December, and February.
Persons charged with a criminal offence are considered not guilty until the charges are proven in court.
Both Stan and Rusu remained in custody as of this week.
