An Aldergrove mom is aiming to foster community connection for youth.
Kimberley Hopkins, mother of three teenagers, created the Facebook group 鈥淎ldergrove Teens鈥 last month to provide a space specifically for teenagers and their parents to find support and organize affordable events youth can participate in.
鈥淚 think we need to create a place for them in our community because there isn鈥檛 one 鈥 they are being left behind,鈥 she said.
She wanted to create a community that could encourage youth to participate in recreational activities in the area, such as going to the pool.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 see any venues in the community that cater to teens,鈥 she said.
Hopkins explained that at Canada Day last year there was a magician, bubble blowers, and live music but it didn鈥檛 appeal to her teenage kids.
鈥淲e just got ice cream and went home.鈥
She said her goal is to help local teenagers have success in their future.
鈥淭he lack of opportunities right now is a roadblock to their success, and they are our future.鈥
Through the group, Hopkins hopes it also raises awareness of challenges teens are facing in Aldergrove, such as homelessness and drug use, she said.
A barbecue event, the first for the group, is in the works but more support is needed to organize it for the summer.
