Of the 114 local actors who auditioned for Theatre in the Country's production of "Anastasia," former Aldergrove resident Mark Braun wasn't expecting to get a call back 鈥 but he did.
His husband told Braun about the casting call, prompting Braun to sign up, audition, gave a "terrible dance" performance, but was called back to play multiple ensemble parts and portray Count Ipolitov.
"[Ipolitov] has a small role and one solo song, and is fleeing Russia (or tries to) and holds onto a dream of what Russia once meant to him," explained Braun about his character.
The role will require Braun to sing, and he said he is thrilled to play the role for his first production.
"I have truly fallen in love with this song," the D.W. Poppy Secondary alumni shared.
Based on the feature film and featuring a captivating score by Tony Award-winning composers Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, 鈥淎nastasia鈥 is a tale of romance, intrigue, and the enduring power of hope.
"I can't wait for people to see this cast do what they do... Each person involved brings such a unique gift and talent to the whole production. I'm truly honoured to be included," Braun said.
This production is under the direction of 91原创鈥檚 Lauren Trotzuk, musical director Jayda Grant, and choreographer Tamara Jaune, and runs until June 22.
鈥淭his is an epic tale that gives the viewer a unique personal perspective on a dark time in history,鈥 said TIC鈥檚 artistic director Reg Parks.
鈥淲ith unforgettable characters and timeless themes, 鈥楢nastasia鈥 is a musical experience like no other. Audiences can expect an evening of enchantment, laughter, and heartwarming moments that will stay with them long after the final curtain falls. Our directing dream team of Lauren, Jayda and Tamara has really brought this show to a magical life.鈥

For Braun, this casting has encouraged him to pursue more auditions in theatre.
"I think I have finally opened a box I don't want to keep a lid on anymore."
