Aldergrove Fair features country roots and cowboy boots for 112th year

New this year are BC Event Maker rides, Jelkes Games, and return of 4-H Woodland 91Ô´´ chapter

The Aldergrove Fair will feature old traditions and see the return of lost ones for its 112th annual weekend-long event.

From Friday to Sunday, July 19 to 21, the fair will host longstanding favourites like the fast draw demonstrations, antique tractor pull, main stage music, a kids zone, and much more.

The famous tractor pull in its traditional format includes multiple weight classes ranging from tiny "garden tractors" up to big farm tractors.

In the tractor pull, a tractor hauls a large sled, with wheels at the back, that has a significant amount of weight on it. The weight doesn’t stay still, either – it moves forward during the course of the pull, so it weighs down the portion of the sled that drags on the ground, increasing resistance the longer the tractor lasts.

Returning to the fair is the 4-H Woodland 91Ô´´ chapter, which will oversee an animal exhibit with rabbits, sheep, and more.

"We are so excited to welcome back 4-H to the fair," said fair president Karen Long.

A cupcake contest is also being added this year, said organizer Cashmere Roder.

The Aldergrove Elks along with local cheer and soccer clubs are managing the country games as well, she noted.

The dog agility show also makes a return this year, which involves pups of all sizes completing an obstacle course. Professional dog shows are held on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and will feature Aldergrove trainer Jessie Lawson.

Also returning are military vehicle exhibits, various vendor booths, a beverage garden, food trucks, pony rides, and a plane display by the Canadian Museum of Flight.

In addition to the vendor booths, will be a "community corner" for local organizations where the public will have access to information or ask questions about them including Aldergrove Community Garden, Kindred Farm Sanctuary, Aldergrove Lions Club, Alder Grove Heritage Society, Aldergrove Heritage Hall, and many others.

"I personally enjoy the laughter and smiles on the children's faces. Each year we look forward to the families and community members who come and enjoy the free family fun we have planned for all age," shared Roder.

Entry to the fair is by donation and go directly into offsetting costs of the fair, Long said.

She added that the board is still looking for volunteers, even during the fair, and especially for dismantling on Sunday night.

"We are always looking for volunteers... You can even show up and say, 'put me to work,'" she said.

People interested in volunteering can reach out in advance at volunteers@aldergrovefair.ca.

The runs from July 19 to 21 at the Aldergrove Athletic Park.
