Those hoping to parade their float through the streets in Aldergrove this Canada Day will find themselves disappointed.
The Aldergrove Fair, which took on hosting the parade, posted on its Facebook page last it 鈥渦nfortunately鈥 is not hosting the traditional Canada Day parade this year.
Robin McIntosh, president of the fair, said expenses associated with organizing the parade on a statutory holiday are too high, particularly traffic control costs.
New regulations require more traffic control on each corner.
鈥淲e鈥檙e not able to absorb that cost anymore,鈥 McIntosh said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 doubled.鈥
Mike Robinson, a fair director, said they also struggled to recruit enough volunteers for both the parade and the Aldergrove Fair 鈥 which are less than two weeks apart.
鈥淲e were running out of volunteers and money, and we had to make some cuts somewhere and [the parade] seemed to be the most sensible way to keep the whole organization afloat,鈥 he said.
McIntosh and Robinson said it鈥檚 too early to make a call for next year, but they hope another organization can take on hosting the parade so they can dedicate all their resources to the fair.
鈥淲e were requested to help with this parade, so we did. But our main passion, as volunteers, is for the Aldergrove Fair because that鈥檚 our specialty,鈥 McIntosh said.
There are still Canada Day activities happening in Aldergrove Athletic Park on Saturday, July 1, starting at 11 a.m. in the north complex and in Fort 91原创 starting at 10 a.m.
The Christmas parade in December will still be held, McIntosh confirmed.
