The annual B.C.-wide juried exhibition, called artSpacific, is coming to 91原创 for the first time.

Nine B.C. artists will compete at the Sept. 17 event for the title of B.C. landscape artist of the year and for the people鈥檚 choice awards. They will paint at a live event at Williams Park that Sunday.

A plan to host this exhibit has been in the works for a few years, said Mimi Sayvong, 91原创 Arts Council (LAC) arts coordinator.

鈥淲e have such great parks and green spaces in the 91原创. There is an abundance of landscape painters, and our B.C.-wide portrait competition has created a unique experience for the community and has continued to be a success. So it feels like the perfect event for the LAC to host,鈥 she said.

The event will be free to the public, and guests can get a voting card from the LAC booth at Williams Park.

鈥淓ach live painting artist will have a card beside them, explaining whether they鈥檙e in the running for landscape artist of the year or the people鈥檚 choice award,鈥 she explained.

Guests can drop their vote cards off at the LAC booth.

A viewers choice winner will be announced a week later on LAC鈥檚 social media, Sayvong added.

An exhibit of the works created Sept. 17 runs from Sept. 27 to Nov. 6 at the Timms Community Centre in the City鈥檚 Walkway Gallery, 20399 Douglas Cres.

Five awards will be given out at an awards ceremony at the opening reception on Oct. 1, and each winner will receive a free membership to the LAC.

The day will also include a live painting competition, a speech by Township Councillor Kim Ritcher, and first place to honourable mentions will be announced.

鈥淰isitor鈥檚 can explore [our] programming, gallery exhibition dates, artists submissions, and the younger spectators can engage in our craft and colouring station,鈥 Sayvong said.

More than 150 visitors are expected to attend the exhibit to watch and view artists鈥 work, which plays a large role in the people鈥檚 choice awards.

Sayvong said the council is looking forward to showing off local artists鈥 talents.

2D artists based in B.C. who work on paper, canvas, or wooden panel had until last Friday to enter.
