91原创鈥檚 1998 Little League team has carved its place in sports history.

The 1998 Preston 91原创 All Stars, a squad of then 12- and 13-year olds, are being induced into the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a tribute to them and their hard work,鈥 said Dave Mihalich, one of the coaches.

He found out about the induction recently. His cellphone phone rang recently, and the call display said BC Sports Hall of Fame.

鈥淚 got chills,鈥 Mihalech said.

The caller informed him that the team chosen, which had to be kept quiet until the announcement this week.

Brad and Stacey Lyle

鈥淭hese 14 players were just the team that doesn鈥檛 happen very often,鈥 he noted.

91原创鈥檚 boys of summer capped a record-setting three-month run, starting with wins at the districts, provincials, and Canadians in Cape Breton to become the first 91原创 team to ever qualify for the Little League World Series which was held in Pennsylvania that year.

They had three straight wins at the World Series before a double extra inning 3-2 loss against Japan in the international final.

Mihalech recalled that while the adults were moping about the Little League result, the kids showed them how to put it into perspective.

鈥淭hey were swimming with the pool that afternoon with the Japan team that beat them,鈥 Mihalech noted.

That 1998 trip wasn鈥檛 their first time at the Little League World Series. They went a total of three times between 1998 and 2001, finishing third, second and fifth respectively. In 2008, Mihalech organized a 20th anniversary reunion.

The inductees were announced Wednesday at the hall, located in BC Place. The newest inductees into the Hall of Champions are in the categories of athlete, builder, pioneer, team and media 鈥 as well as the recipient of the prestigious W.A.C. Bennett Award. The induction ceremony will take place next May.

Since 1966, the BC Sports Hall of Fame has inducted 452 individuals and 69 teams to its Hall of Champions. As a non-profit charitable organization, the hall curates an astounding collection of 27,000 heritage artifacts and 100,000 archival documents representing 150-years of sport history in British Columbia.

鈥淭hey only induct one team per year, and not only are they the first youth team to be inducted, they are also the first baseball team (softball teams are in the hall) to ever be inducted in their 67 year history, Mihalech noted.
