LETTER: Accuses Conservatives of 'arrogance'

Critical of party that won't engage with voters in 'meaningful' ways

Conservative leader John Rustad (Black Press Media files)

Dear Editor,

I was having a discussion with my daughter about the B.C. election and the Conservatives a few days ago.

Something she said resonated with me after watching the latest CON Rustad ad by his wife – an ad that that bothered me, but I couldn't put my finger on why it bothered me.

My daughter said that people should vote with their heads (facts) and not their hearts (emotions).

Then, I realized that was what bothered me about Rustad's ad – it appeals to people's emotions and lacks facts about his policies.

My initial reaction to Rustad's ad was that he is so unsaleable, so unlikable, that he has to have his wife state that 'John is a good man,' because he stood by her through her cancer (which any decent husband/partner should) and supported her after they found she couldn't have children.

That's it.

What do those facts have to do with Rustad's conservative policies?

Nothing.

Add to this the fact that here in my riding in the Fraser Valley and other ridings here in the Valley, the Conservative candidates have deigned to not be there to debate.

Another question to contemplate: Why would anyone vote for a candidate who is so arrogant that they will not come to an all-candidate meeting and face questions from the audience?

How much arrogance will we voters tolerate before we realize that – given this kind of arrogance and the refusal to face questions from voters – if they do this now, what will they do if they become government?
