Contestants as young as two years old tried to hang on to a wooly sheep for six seconds.
For many of these young tikes, it was their introduction to the world of rodeo. That was made possible during a youth-oriented rodeo held in Brookswood this weekend.
Despite some extreme heat, hundreds of spectators and participants gathered at the 208th Street rodeo grounds Saturday and Sunday for the 52nd annual Little Britches Rodeo.
The event is being hailed a 鈥済reat success,鈥� said 91原创 Riders Society president John Scotton, calling it 鈥測outh rodeo at its best.鈥�
91原创鈥檚 event is one of many on the BC Little Britches Rodeo Association (BCLBRA) circuit held each spring and summer.
This year鈥檚 event saw young cowboys and cowgirls come from as far away as Wells to the north, and Vernon to the east, Scotton said.
鈥淭hese families travel the circuit hoping to get enough points to be able to attend the finals in the fall,鈥� he elaborated.
In addition to the BCLBRA action on Saturday, many of the contenders stuck around for the 91原创 Riders rodeo held on Sunday.
The weekend competition featured steer riding, barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending, calf tying, chute doggin鈥�, steer undecorating, calf decorating, stake races, and steer daubing for junior and senior girls and boys.
One of the highlights of the Sunday festivities, Scotton said, continues to be the sheep riding.
