Two separate fires over the past four days have claimed the lives of two people in Surrey. 

An 85-year-old woman died in a house fire in Whalley on Saturday, and a 77-year-old man died in another house fire in Newton three days later, according to a Surrey RCMP news release.

Surrey Fire Service responded to a call of a residential fire in the 13600 block of 112A Avenue on Saturday, July 20 at 8 p.m. 

"Surrey RCMP frontline officers were called to the scene after an 85-year-old woman was found deceased," Sgt. James Mason said in a news release on Tuesday (July 23).  The single-home residential fire in the 13600 block of 112A Avenue was isolated to a room on the upper floor. 

On Tuesday (July 23), Surrey Fire and RCMP responded to a "fully engulfed" single residential fire in the 13600 block of 56B Avenue. A 73-year-old woman escaped from the home and was transported to hospital.

"Unfortunately, a 77-year-old man did not make it out of the fire," Mason said. 

The fire inspector said both fires were not suspicious, and BC Corners Service has taken conduct the investigations to determine the cause of death in both cases.
