Drugs, cash and a handgun with a silencer were seized by Mission RCMP last Wednesday (April 9) after a traffic stop on 2nd Avenue. 

According to a news release from the detachment, a 41-year-old Mission man is now facing charges for weapons possession and breaching court conditions. 

Police pulled the man over after he was spotted near Columbia Street riding an electric moped without a helmet. He provided the officer with a name and date of birth but said he didn鈥檛 have identification on him, RCMP say. 

After a warning about potential consequences for lying, police said the man admitted the lie and provided his real name.

An officer discovered the man was a repeat offender. Per the news release, he was subject to conditions of a release order for drug trafficking charges and was on probation for convictions including carrying a concealed weapon and firearms possession.

鈥淒uring the interaction, the officer also noticed that the man had dropped a package of contraband cigarettes,鈥� Mounties said. 

鈥淎s a result, the officer arrested the man under the federal Excise Act.  Upon being told he was under arrest, the man then admitted that he was in possession of a firearm 鈥� which was determined to be a loaded handgun with a silencer tucked into his waistband.鈥� 

RCMP also found hundreds of dollars in cash, along with drugs including 鈥渟uspected鈥� fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and cannabis. 

The man was arrested and held in custody for a bail hearing concerning the incident. 

鈥淢ission RCMP highlight this as an example of how quickly a minor investigation can turn into something significant.  What started out as a proactive traffic stop for a basic infraction under the Motor Vehicle Act quickly led to the seizure of drugs and a loaded handgun,鈥� the release reads.
