Spuzzum First Nation Chief James Hobart pleaded guilty to an assault charge in Abbotsford provincial court on Friday (March 28).
Hobart was charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon in relation to offences in Mission in May and September of 2022, according to Court Services Online.
He pleaded guilty to the assault charge, while the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) says no plea has been entered in relation to the assault with a weapon charge.
"It is anticipated that the Crown would direct a stay of proceedings on that count at the conclusion of the sentencing hearing regarding count 2 (assault with a weapon)," BCPS said.
Another court appearance for Hobart is set for Thursday (April 3) to schedule a sentencing hearing. A trial date is also slated for June 26 for a single count alleging a breach of a release order.
Hobart has been chief of Spuzzum First Nation since 2011. During that time, he has been involved with the restoration of Alexandria Bridge and efforts to conserve spotted owl habitat.
A group of Spuzzum First Nation members protested and demanded Hobart's resignation in 2023 with concerns about a lack of communication, a lack of transparency and consultation, and misuse of authority.
