Two tractor-trailer trucks collided on Highway 17 in Surrey on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at about 8:10 p.m. Both drivers were taken to hospital.

A serious collision involving two tractor-trailer trucks closed Highway 17 in both directions last night, Surrey RCMP report â€” and drivers are warned to watch for continued closures for their morning commute today (Wednesday, July 17).

The crash, at Highway 17 an 116 Avenue, happened at about 8:10 p.m. last night (Tuesday, July 16), according to an RCMP release.

A Black Press freelancer who was on the scene reported that the engine was torn from one semi and landed in the middle of the road. The other semi ended up off the road in the trees. Both cabs also caught fire, and bystanders said a passing motorist rescued one of the drivers from his burning cab, the freelancer reports.

Surrey RCMP said both drivers and one passenger were taken to hospital, including a 41-year-old man driver of one and a 44-year-old driver and 64-year-old passenger of the other vehicle. All injured individuals except the 41-year-old have been released, police shared in an updated release Wednesday morning.

The Surrey RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) were called out, and investigators were looking into the factors that had led to the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash camera footage from the area is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Drive BC reported on Twitter/X at 5 a.m. that Highway 17 remained closed between Bridgeview Drive and the North Surrey Truck Parking in the aftermath, which remain closed still.
