Police are looking for witnesses related to a homicide they're investigating in Surrey.

On Sunday (Nov. 17), at approximately 9:52 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a physical altercation between two large groups of men outside of a business in the area of 102 Avenue and City Parkway in Surrey, a release said.

The parties fled the area prior to officers arriving on scene, but a short time later, Surrey RCMP were called to a report of an injured man area near 67B Avenue and 146 Street.

Despite live-saving efforts by BC Emergency Health Services and Surrey Fire Service, the man succumbed to his injuries, RCMP said. 

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called and will be working the investigation in partnership with Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have video footage of the incident, is asked to contact the IHIT Information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448).

There have been 10 homicides to date in Surrey in 2024.

Last year, Surrey had 12 homicides, 22 in 2022 and 10 in 2021. In 2020 there were 12 homicides, 21 in 2019 and 15 in 2018.

The most the city recorded in any given year was 25 in 2013, breaking the previous record of 21 in 2005.

Since IHIT took over investigating homicides from the Surrey RCMP鈥檚 serious crimes section in June 2003, it has to date cleared 206 of the total 366 homicide cases it has investigated in Surrey.

That is a clearance rate of 56 per cent. These cases, according to IHIT, 鈥渉ave been cleared by charge, recommended charge, or cleared otherwise.鈥�
