If one believes in myth (or Marvel), Thor was busy wielding his mythological hammer last night, as a rare overnight thunder storm struck White Rock and South Surrey in the wee hours.

Many took to social media to note the notably noisy event, with some posting photos of lighting strikes over the ocean prior to the thunderous booms and cracks that followed.

"Wow! Just now from White Rock," one X user posted, with a photo showing a lighting strike east of the pier. 

Another X user posted video of the lighting strikes from South Surrey looking south toward the U.S. border, noting there were "flashes every 30s to a min. This will be good. Winds at 35km/h at the moment. Feel like there will be branches down after this one."

In other social media groups, user posted about the rarity of thunder storms on the West Coast, with many commenting on the severity of the thunder and the extremely loud booms, bangs and cracks it produced throughout the storm, which ended in most areas by about 2 a.m.

The expected storm prompted Environment Canada to issued a Special Weather Statement for Metro Vancouver, Victoria, the southern Gulf Islands, Howe Sound, east Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, saying that strong southerly winds, lightning and heavy downpours were expected.

By Sunday morning, showers were forecast to end by late morning, with Environment Canada predicting a 60 per cent chance of showers and the "risk of a thunderstorm."
