Mission woman found dead inside crashed vehicle

Driver sustains non-life-threatening injuries; woman's cause of death not yet confirmed

A woman was found dead inside a vehicle at the bottom of a steep embankment in Mission early Monday morning (July 8).

In a news release on Friday (July 12), Mission RCMP asked the public for more information on the incident.

Police say forestry workers came across a 33-year-old man on the Norrish Creek Forest Service Road at approximately 4:30 a.m. on July 8.

The man told forestry workers he was driving his blue 2003 Ford Explorer the day before when it went off an embankment. Per the release, he reported a woman from the Mission area was a passenger in the vehicle and killed in the crash.

He says he managed to climb the steep embankment to the roadway.  Police say the man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

Mission Search and Rescue Society assisted other first responders in getting down to the wreckage, which was more than 300 metres below the road.   The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and BC Coroner鈥檚 Service were also on scene.

The crash was listed among 19 motor vehicle incident fatalities in the Lower Mainland between July 5 and July 10 in a news release from the province.

鈥淚t may be an accident, however, we are still in the early stages of information gathering, and we have not yet been able to confirm whether the woman died strictly as a result of the crash, or whether there were any other factors involved in her death,鈥 Mission RCMP said.

Mounties are asking those who were at the Paradise swimming hole between July 7 and July 11, along with anyone who saw a blue 2003 Ford Explorer on Norrish Creek Forest Service Road on July 7,  to call the detachment at 604-826-7161.
