IHIT investigating Sunday night homicide in Surrey

Home in Port Kells reportedly surrounded by police tape

A homicide investigation is underway in the Port Kells neighbourhood of Surrey, after police responded to a home on 182A near Parsons Drive in Surrey Sunday night (June 16), at approximately 10 p.m.

Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a woman with life-threatening injuries inside a residence near the 9800-block of 182A Street, in Surrey.

With assistance from the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service (PDS), members of the Surrey RCMP quickly located and arrested a man near the area, a release said.

The woman was transported to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called and will be working in partnership with Surrey RCMP investigating the case.

Police are currently in the evidence-gathering phase.

This is Surrey鈥檚 fifth homicide of the year.

Last year, Surrey had 12 homicides, 22 in 2022 and 10 in 2021. In 2020 there were 12 homicides, 21 in 2019 and 15 in 2018. The most the city recorded in any given year was 25 in 2013, breaking the previous record of 21 in 2005.

Since IHIT took over investigating homicides from the Surrey RCMP鈥檚 serious crimes section in June 2003, it has to date cleared 204 of the total 362 homicide cases it has investigated in Surrey, a clearance rate of 56 per cent. These cases, according to IHIT, 鈥渉ave been cleared by charge, recommended charge, or cleared otherwise.鈥

Anyone with further information about the June 16 homicide who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the IHIT Information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca
