Surrey firefighters made quick work of a house fire Sunday evening, battling a blaze at a two-storey home in Newton.

Firefighters were called shortly after 7 p.m. July 7 to the house, located in the 12500-block of 77B Avenue.

"Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the two-storey house. Firefighters entered the house and gained access to the attic, where the fire had actually burned through the roof," Surrey Fire Service assistant chief Greg McRobbie said Monday.

Firefighters searched the house and extinguished the fire quickly.

"There were no injuries... luckily there were working smoke detectors in the home," McRobbie said. 

The source of the fire is unknown; the fire inspector was expected at the scene "this morning first thing," he noted. 

Roughly 10 people were displaced by the fire. 

"Eight people luckily, had friends and family to stay with... two required assistance, which was provided."

A total of 16 firefighters worked to put out the blaze in temperatures that are the subject of a current heat warning issued by Environment Canada.

"It was quite warm yesterday, so they were definitely feeling that, but they did an excellent job," McRobbie said.
