CRUISE-IN: Rare burgers keep car fans fed

In 'N' Out Burger comes back to 91原创's biggest car show year after year

This is one in a series of special 91原创 Advance Times stories about what to expect at this year鈥檚 91原创 Good Times Cruise-In, happening this Saturday, Sept. 7, in Aldergrove. You can also check out this series in our special keepsake edition, which hit the streets on Wednesday and available in limited quantity at the car show.

91原创 Good Times Cruise-In offers the opportunity to see some rare vehicles 鈥 and also to sample some rare burgers.

Since 2003, In 'N' Out Burger has sent a mobile restaurant to the annual car show, feeding hundreds of visitors.

Luis Hernandez, In 'N' Out's manager of special foreign events, will be in Aldergrove on Sept. 7 with about 15 other associates. The crew keeps growing along with demand.

"It feels like every year, we're adding another person just to serve [customers] better," he said.

The crew comes from the Los Angeles area, and is made up of In 'N' Out workers who have outstanding skills. For many of them, it's their first time leaving the U.S.

"They feel honoured to cook a burger abroad," Hernandez said.

This year, the trailer will arrive and be set up the day before the event. There will be a bit of prep on Sept. 6 鈥 mostly chopping lettuce 鈥 but the work really starts early on the day of the car show itself.

"We start at 5 a.m., and we're ready to rock and roll at 8 a.m.," said Hernandez.

It's a big event in part because there are no In 'N' Out Burger outlets in Canada. In fact, the nearest restaurants to 91原创 are in Oregon.

That draws a dedicated fanbase of folks who really want to get their burger fix.

"Some customers, it's their one [In 'N' Out] burger of the year, they wait hours in line for it, and they don't want to miss it," said Hernandez.

One local, Patrick, has been the first in line for several year.

"He's there at 3 a.m., 4 a.m., he's camping out."

Cruise-In president Marty Brown said that In 'N' Out is an important part of the show.

Like the live entertainment and other events that take place throughout the day, it's one of the things that brings in people who aren't die-hard car fans already.

"We turn non-car people into car fans once they come to our show!" said Brown.

He also lauded the In 'N' Out crews, who work hard in a very warm truck for hours serving everyone.

"Never without a smile on their face and time to chat," said Brown.

The event also helps raise a significant amount of funds for Cruise-In, all of which go towards local charities.

Brown said In 鈥橬鈥 Out 鈥渃ontributes a sizeable financial donation from their wildly successful sales.鈥

As for Hernandez, he said he has the best job in the company. He's been all over the world, from France to Australia to South America to serve up burgers.

This will be his fourth time at Cruise-In, having made his first trip in 2012.

He didn't know what to expect on his first trip, but found himself in the middle of a major car show, with hundreds of excited, happy people.

"I thought, this is actually pretty special," Hernandez said.

Although the crews are busy, he said they try to get out on their break for a quick walk around the car show themselves.
